In the attic bedroom, I open Season of Death and lay it face down on the desk to dry. When I was first hired, the assistants told me to not bother with the early books in the famous author’s oeuvre, as those books represented a style he has since abandoned. “Nascent efforts,” they called the early works. The cover of Season of Death is black and shiny. The title and the author’s name are embossed in a large red font. At the bottom, a figure races into the distance. I can’t tell anything about this person, what they might be running away from or toward. A net of ambiguity cast so wide it becomes meaningless.
